My role: researching, writing, making the zine, and making mockups

INTRODUCTION

Research Log Try 1.jpeg

Throughout the semester, our Rhetoric and Writing class explored and researched AI in depth. For our final project, we were challenged to create a creative piece that examines the integration of AI into a field or practice of our choice. I chose to focus on how AI can be effectively incorporated into the personal creative process and how it can become a valuable collaborator within design teams.

RESEARCH

I conducted extensive research on modern technologies, academic studies, journals, essays, and articles to gain a comprehensive understanding of AI’s role in design. Additionally, I analyzed and mapped key stakeholders involved in AI integration within the design field, including designers, developers, researchers, and industry leaders. This helped me identify varying perspectives, challenges, and opportunities in incorporating AI as a tool for creativity and collaboration.

DIRECTION

I decided to create a guide tailored for designers and design teams, focusing on the effective integration of AI into the creative process. As part of the project, we were asked to analyze examples of our chosen medium—identifying what we found effective and ineffective—and articulate the reasoning behind our preferences. This analysis helped shape the structure and approach of my guide/manifesto.

DESIGN

I distilled my semester-long research into a zine, presenting my findings in a visually engaging and accessible format. In addition, I developed a sample design process for both individuals and design teams, outlining each step and identifying where AI can assist, how it enhances the workflow, and why it adds value. Throughout the project, my primary focus was ensuring that humans remained at the forefront, using AI as a tool to support and elevate creativity rather than replace it.

I experimented with various color palettes but ultimately chose black and white to keep the focus on the research rather than the visuals. To reinforce the AI theme, I selected a digital-inspired typeface and incorporated technological imagery, creating a simple but cohesive aesthetic that aligned with the project's subject matter.

DISCLAIMER

Long after completing this project, I realized that I did not explore the environmental impacts of AI. The environment and nature are undoubtedly key stakeholders in this discussion, yet I overlooked their role in my research. Recognizing this gap, I acknowledge the importance of considering AI’s sustainability implications in future explorations.
